Life at 1146 and the End of Summer

Summer has slipped away once again. I was pretty busy not really doing anything and hardly noticed it passing. I was so busy, in fact, that I didn’t even have the time to write in this blog, or go to Maine or Arizona, or read all the books I wanted to, or go to tai chi classes or music lessons. Mostly I was working (as a cook in a poolside snackbar at the Trenton Country Club – a job which ended on labor day). The hours were pretty long, so I usually just slept and hung out whenever I wasn’t at work. Though this sounds like a failed summer, it wasn’t really so bad. In fact, I’d say it was, overall, a good one. Life at the house has been good (except for some recent drama), and I feel that it is going to keep getting better.
Here are some photos that other people took on my camera of things that happened over the summer: (more…)
Simplify, Pt. 2
So, here are the results after one week of my project. Unfortunately, they don’t really tell me anything very interesting – just that I like berries and grapes, which I’m sure I could’ve guessed without keeping a tally, and that I rode my bike more than I drove my car, which I’m quite proud of. One problem was the fact that I didn’t really do much of anything over the week. I mostly just read books or listened to podcasts during the day and went and hung out at someone’s house at night. I also think I got too distracted by the food tally and didn’t really concentrate on the other stuff that I used. I’m pretty sure I forgot to record some stuff too, but it is what it is. I like berries and grapes.

Here’s a good picture of my summer so far. I sleep on a little built in bench on the porch and wake up with the sun (most of the time). In the front is a spinach and onion omelette with smoked gouda cheese and fresh basil, with orange cranberry juice to drink. In back are my sprouts and a bonsai tree. The cd next to the omelette is a free cd of indian classical music that I got in a package of pre-made indian food (that’s not on the list because I haven’t eaten it yet).
First Signs of Life

Just when I’d begun to worry I’d done something wrong and none of my seeds were going to sprout, I noticed this little tomato stretching up toward the sun. There are also a few coriander and pepper sprouts just beginning to push up through the soil. Yay!
Seeds!

On June 1, I am going to be moving into a new house with some of my best friends, and I plan on planting a serious garden to supply some of our food. To prepare, I bought the following seeds from Whole Foods: Sweet Corn, Roma Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Onions, Kale, Snow Peas, Squash, Zucchini, a blend of salad greens, Cilantro, and Fenugreek. I’m going to be starting some of them this week, if all goes well, and I can’t wait to get everything in the ground and see what happens.
